READING and COMPREHENSION
A large component of literacy is reading. Reading involves decoding the text AND comprehending it. There are quite a number of students in schools today who are able to read the words on the page but unable to explain what they read. After your child has read to you, ask them to close the book and retell it in their own words. You could also ask some prompting questions such as: Who, What, When, Where, Why.
If your child is having difficulty reading the words on the page, the first step is to ensure they have phonemic awareness. This involves relating letters and blends to their sounds. For assistance with this, the following website may help your child www.starfall.com
