READING and COMPREHENSION

A large component of literacy is reading. Reading involves decoding the text AND comprehending it. There are quite a number of students in schools today who are able to read the words on the page but unable to explain what they read. After your child has read to you, ask them to close the book and retell it in their own words. You could also ask some prompting questions such as: Who, What, When, Where, Why.

If your child is having difficulty reading the words on the page, the first step is to ensure they have phonemic awareness. This involves relating letters and blends to their sounds. For assistance with this, the following website may help your child www.starfall.com

The 100 most used words are also essential for students to develop fluent reading. To help your child with this, you can print some flash cards from the following website (copy it into your browser): www.sparklebox.co.uk/cll/lettersandsounds/hfwords.html

WRITING

In Victorian school, we employ the use of "Victorian Modern Cursive". Ideally, it is taught in the following order:_____________________  To assist your child with their handwriting, copy and paste the following link into your browser. I would suggest the version with dotted thirds. http://www.education.vic.gov.au/studentlearning/teachingresources/english/handwriting.htm
